While working on some Calc documentation I ran across the phrases recalculate and recalculate hard. I couldn't figure out there difference, so I posted to the list. Eike Rathke responded with an answer.
A normal recalc calculates formula cells that are marked "dirty", for
example because cells they depend on changed, and that aren't
recalculated yet by displaying or otherwise accessing results. A hard
recalc calculates _all_ formula cells, independent of state. Normally
you don't notice a difference because all that is displayed in a view is
already recalculated. You may notice a difference if formulas use macro
functions that have side effects, for example.
