How do I set up my filters to indicate when a post is from an unsubscribed user?
Often, when a message is sent to a mailing list by an unsubscribed user it is useful to cc the user the response or else they may not see it. This is a very useful practice. However, there is a downside. This practice increases list traffic and can be annoying to other users. One way to reduce this problem is for all posters to cc unsubscribed users when they post to the list. The following is a set of instructions to sett mail filters in Mozilla Thunderbird to identify unsubscribed users by marking them red.
Open Mozilla TB and select Tools > Filters
This window will open:
Select the account you receive your OOo mail to from the Filter for list. This is particularly important if you have a separate e-mail account setup for OOo lists to avoid spam.
Click New...
Select a title, and click the Match any of the following radio button.
The drop down list where it says subject should be changed to Delivered-To When you initially set this up, that option probably won't be there. To add it, select the bottom entry Customize and add it. When you click customize, the following dialog will open:
You should now be at about this point:
Set the middle box to contains and the value to moderator for users@openoffice.org.
Then under actions I set mine to move to my OOo Users folder. I move all of the users list mail to that folder, so that is normal. If you also move you mail, do that, and also set it to Label the message and set that box to Important.
The end result should look like this:
Now all messages that are from non-subscribers are red. Now, I know that if I respond, I should add their e-mail as a CC and the list's address as reply-to.
NOTE: If you have a separate filter to move all messages to users@openoffice.org to a different folder as well, the unmoderated filter needs to run 1st, or else it won't ever get scanned by the filter.
